Children and teens need school physicals when entering certain grades, as well as when they plan to participate in sports at school. physical examSchool physicals are very similar to a regular annual exam, but might also consist of a few additional tests to ensure your child is healthy enough to play sports if they plan to do so. An appointment is not necessary when you take your child to a walk-in clinic in Falls Church and Arlington, VA. At Loehmann's Walk-In Clinic, Dr. Rizwan Dar can complete your child’s school physical.

School Physicals

At Loehmann's Walk-In Clinic, your walk in clinic of Falls Church and Arlington, there are two components to the school physical. The first part consists of gathering information about your child’s personal and family medical histories. During this portion of the exam the doctor will inquire about the following items:

  • Allergies
  • Any history of serious injury or illness
  • Medications your child is currently taking
  • Unusual symptoms your child might be experiencing (chest pain, trouble breathing, dizziness)

The second part of the school physical is a physical exam in which the doctor will check to see that your child is healthy and is growing properly. During this portion of the exam, the following items are typically checked:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Blood Pressure
  • Eyes, Nose and Throat
  • Abdomen
  • Heart
  • Lungs

Height and weight are taken to see if they are within the normal range for your child’s age. The other components of the exam, such as listening to the heart and lungs, help the doctor confirm your child is healthy or alert the doctor if there is a problem. In addition to all of the above items, the doctor might also test your child’s vision during the exam. In some cases, urinalysis testing might also be done as part of the school physical.

A school physical consists of many of the same things as a regular annual wellness checkup so your child will likely already be familiar with many aspects of the exam. As mentioned, there is no need to schedule an appointment in advance. You can simply stop by your Falls Church and Arlington, VA walk in clinic during operating hours when it is convenient for you. To check what hours we are open, call Loehmann's Walk-In Clinic at (703) 846-9555.

When a medical issue has us stressed out or stopped in our tracks we may often think that we need to immediately rush to our local emergency room. Of course, there are certain health problems that warrant getting professional medical care immediately, but there are times when just visiting our Arlington, VA urgent care doctor, Dr. Rizwan Dar, will do the trick.

Not sure what constitutes a visit to our Arlington urgent care clinic? It’s okay; most people don’t. An urgent care clinic is a great way to treat common sicknesses or injuries when your doctor isn’t available and you just can’t wait a couple days to schedule an appointment.

If you think your health concern or injury is something you would see your doctor about, heading to our urgent care is probably a better option than your local ER. An emergency room may seem like a good option at the time since they have doctors to provide you with immediate care day or night, but they are better equipped at handling serious problems such as heart attacks, strokes and even severe injuries due to car accidents.

Common issues that an urgent care clinic can address include:

  • Common cold and flu
  • Strains or sprains
  • Lower back pain
  • Headaches
  • Asthma
  • Rashes
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Broken bones
  • Fever
  • Respiration infections
  • Sore throat
  • Eye infections

An emergency room visit should be the first choice if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Trouble speaking
  • Mental confusion
  • Paralysis or weakness
  • Trouble breathing
  • Severe chest pain
  • Fever in babies less than three months old
  • Severe burns
  • Seizures

If it’s your child’s first time getting a physical examination know how to prepare them.

Whenever a child hears that they have to go to the doctors, it can be kind of a difficult conversation. Most children aren’t thrilled to know sports physicalsthat they have to come into the office and many may be fearful. But a sports physical is something they should never have to worry about. From the office of our Falls Church and Arlington, VA doctor, Dr. Rizwan Dar, find out how to prepare your little one for this easy visit.

What to Know Before You Go

Most schools make it mandatory for every child to get a sports physical prior to playing a sport. Make sure to bring any paperwork from the school or league with you to our office so we can sign off on it (not bringing in the proper paperwork could delay your child’s participation).

Before your child comes into our office, it’s important to sit down with them and talk to them about what to expect. You’ll want to explain that our Falls Church and Arlington medical doctor might ask questions about how they are feeling, past injuries, etc. As a parent you will also want to be prepared to talk about your child’s medical history, lifestyle, habits and nutrition.

You’ll also want to tell your child that the doctor will examine their body to make sure that everything looks healthy enough for sports. Tell them not to worry; this examination is painless.

Besides sitting down and talking with your child about what to expect for their visit, offer up something to look forward to after their physical such as lunch at their favorite restaurant or a toy they’ve been eyeing. By offering little rewards, trips to the doctor’s office often conjure up images of positive, fun experiences afterwards rather than just a yucky trip to the doctor’s.

Whether your child needs a sport physical or you are dealing with an urgent health concern, turn to Loehmann's Walk-In Clinic in Falls Church and Arlington, VA to take care of every member of your family. Your health is most important. Turn to the experts!
